Subject: Tail light bulb changing

Question
I have a 2004 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and I am trying to change a blown tail light bulb, I have the bulb but I don't know how to access the light housing.

Answer
Hi Robert,

I'll assume this is a Grand Cherokee, since they stopped making Cherokees in 2001. Small point, but significantly different body styles.

With the rear hatch open, there should be two philips-head screws that hold the housing in -- perpendicular to the length of the vehicle. Remove those, and give the housing a slight tug, towards the rear, to release the alignment pin. Then, release the proper bulb connector by turning it counter-clockwise. Replace the bulb and reverse these instructions.

Bear in mind that these housings had problems from time to time, internally, so it may need to be replaced -- not likely, but possible. If you need a test unit, just remove the other side and use that. Good luck!
