About kenji Toelken Expertise I will do my best to answer questions regarding chassis electrical, suspension, car audio, parts fabrication, engine and drive train. I don't claim to know everything there is to know about mechanics, hopefully through this experience I can learn some stuff from all of you as well.
Experience I have been involved in auto mechanics and restoration for 30 years. I have owned and restored about 50 cars ranging from Peugeot to Hillman. I have recently built 2 CJ-5's from the ground up, fabricated parts for both and currently own a Cherokee XJ in progress.
Question I have a 68 Jeep CJ5. It currently has an old Buick Steering column in it, but I don't know what year and it needs replaced. To keep the tilt feature, what would work best for space and versatility. My husband needs something that he can fit comfortably behind as well. What might you recommend?
Answer Hi Christine,
If it's got a GM tilt wheel now, I would recommend replacing it with another GM column. It's already set up for one so it shouldn't be too difficult. As far as space, if it's tummy room you're looking for you can purchase an aftermarket wheel like a Grant. They're usually a bit smaller in diameter than stock wheels. If you want to use the same key and ignition lock cylinder you have, you'll have to pull the steering wheel off the new column anyway to swap out the lock cylinder.
Hope this helps,
Kenji
If it's possible I would remove the worn one making it easier for you to match up the new one.
