About kenji Toelken Expertise I will do my best to answer questions regarding chassis electrical, suspension, car audio, parts fabrication, engine and drive train. I don't claim to know everything there is to know about mechanics, hopefully through this experience I can learn some stuff from all of you as well.
Experience I have been involved in auto mechanics and restoration for 30 years. I have owned and restored about 50 cars ranging from Peugeot to Hillman. I have recently built 2 CJ-5's from the ground up, fabricated parts for both and currently own a Cherokee XJ in progress.
Question have a 1983 jeep CJ5 and i just found out that i have to rebuild my engine....its an inline 6 258 4.2 liter with only 91000 miles on it. i was kinda wanting to put a 305 in it or maybe a 350....but most likely the 305...my question is would i have to get a different transmission, it is a manual four speed.
Answer Hey Kolby,
There are transmission adapters depending upon what transmission you have. A good resource for these is Quadratec or 4wheeldrive. Both have pretty good tech assistance and good catalogs. Spendy but good.
Not to tell you what to do....................are you sure you want to swap out your 258 for a 305? I'd definitely rebuild and keep the 258 if it were me. Way better torque for crawling and all around on or off road. If you're going to go V-8 go with the 350 for sure. You'll be happier in the long run.
