Jehovah`s Witness/About the Bible
A friend of mind said if i wanted to know more about God and get closer to him, we must go to the Bible. How so, may I ask?
I have another question if I may impose on your expertise. Let's say a person that use to go to church, now doesn't. Also a person that felt God was close to him, now doesn't. What can they do to rekindle that old flame?
Good questions and thanks for asking.
I must say, your friend is correct: "to know more about God and get closer to him, we must go to the Bible".
How so? Because it contains the very thoughts of God. Look at it this way, it's a personal letter to you from our Creator. Hence, all that He needed to say and wants us to know is in His letter - the Bible.
So when your reading it, you're actually finding out what's He like. You're finding out who He is, what makes Him sad and what makes Him happy. What makes Him angry and what's makes Him joyful. You'll come to understand what it means to "fear God" - in a very loving and healthy way. You'll come to understand why He created "man". What's the purpose of life and many more wonderful things.
By reading his written word the Bible, you come to know and love Him. Jesus Christ put it plainly this way:
. . .For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life. . . (John 3:16)
Taking this to a personal level, try reading it this way:
. . .For God loved (Phil) so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that (you Phil) exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life. . . (John 3:16)
See how we can get closer to God? And how much God loved us?
"he gave his only-begotten Son" for YOU and I Phil!!!
What does this mean?
. . .God did not send his Son into the world for him to judge the world, but for the world to be saved through him. (John 3:17)
Hence . . .Whoever exercises faith in him is not to be judged. . . . (John 3:18)
. . .Now this is the basis for judgment: that the light has come into the world, but men have loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were wicked. 20 For whoever practices vile things hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be reproved. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that his works may be made manifest as having been done in harmony with God. (John 3:19-21)
Therefore, produce fruit that befits repentance. (Matthew 3:8)
. . .Strip off the old personality with its practices, 10 and clothe yourselves with the new personality, which through accurate knowledge is being made new according to the image of the One who created it, (Colossians 3:9, 10)
Thus "faith" and "works" go hand in hand, one can't exist without the other.
But does going to church enough to keep one in the "faith" and stay in the truth?
NO! Because once we learn the truth we NEED to share it with others. You can't STOP it - once you have this in you. This is what the evangelization mean when Jesus COMMANDED his followers to do in the following verses.
. . .Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things. (Matthew 28:19, 20)
But how does one learn to evangelize without proper training? It's very hard to do if not impossible. So this is where God's ORGANIZATION comes in. We learn so many things in God's Organization - especially about the preaching work.
In any case, may I suggest you browse through this publication? "Benefit From Theocratic School Education"
Once you that, you'll see what I mean.
Also, why not ask one of the Witnesses in your area for a Bible Study? You'll be quite surprised of the many wonderful things you'll learn about God.
