The Definition of an Apostate is a person who abandons a set of particular religious beliefs. The word can only be used by people in a particular faith to describe other people who have left that particular faith. If the apostate has changed his views on a particular sect and joins another he is not an apostate in the eyes of the new sect.

A good example is that everybody who joins the Watchtower’s Organization of Jehovah Witnesses must at some point, by definition of the word, be an apostate in the eye of their former denomination. However in the eyes of the Watchtower they are not.
