About Derrick Holland
Expertise
I was raised in the religion known as Jehovah`s Witnesses for 13 years. Since becoming a born-again Christian, I have researched extensively this religion, especially their doctrines and their history. I can answer questions about their doctrines from the perspective of Biblical Christianity.

Experience
23 years of Biblical research into the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith, and how they differ from the teachings of the Watchtower.

Answer
Hello Pamela.  Thank you for writing.  I am sorry for the lengthy delay in getting back to you.  Part of it is that I have been working long hours and haven't had much time on the computer, and part of it is that I was trying to do some research on the last question you asked, regarding the mark of the beast.  I still am not satisfied with the information I have, so I will have to send you a follow-up later on.

Also, I had some trouble understanding exactly what you are asking me in some of your questions.

For instance, the question...."what is the amology of the word yaway?"

I don't exactly know what you are asking me, but I assume you are referring to the name of God.  Jehovah's Witnesses believe that this should be pronounced "Jehovah", and that unless you use this name, God does not hear your prayers.  Of course, this is an absurd believe, but that is what they think.

They believe that nothing happens after death.  In their beliefs, a person ceases to exist after the death of the body.  They do not believe that the person is in heaven, or in hell.  This doctrine is known as "soul-sleep", meaning that the soul is not conscious in eternity.  Again, this is a false belief.  I have written an article about this on my web site at www.jehovahswitnesses-thetruth.com, and the article is entitled "WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE?"  I think you will find it helpful in seeing what the Bible teaches about this, and how the Word of God disagrees with the Jehovah's Witness teaching on this subject.

As for the split between soul and spirit, this is a question that I don't think anyone really knows the full answer to.  The Bible says that the Word of God is "quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the DIVIDING ASUNDER OF SOUL AND SPIRIT...."  This indicates that these 2 entities are entertwined and closely connected together.  Both soul and spirit are spoken of in the Bible as being in heaven, therefore, I would conclude that they remain together even at death.

Some have said that the soul is the inner seat of man, consisting of the emotions and thoughts, while the spirit is man's breath.  The spirit of man, according to the Bible, is MUCH more than breath however.  Like I say, I am not sure that there is a definitive answer to this, that we could be dogmatic about.

As for the book "PAY ATTENTION OT DANIEL'S PROPHECY", I have never personally read it.  I have heard some things about it, however.  That the Watchtower thinks that some of Daniel's prophecies have their direct fulfillment in the Jehovah's Witness religion.  This is ridiculous.  I can give you a site, which I think has some comments about this book.  The site is from a former elder in the JW religion, who is now a Christian.  His site is www.cftf.com, and I think you can find the information there that you are looking for.

Your next question is another one I do not fully understand.  In the Bible, a time usually represents a year.  This is used in Daniel 4, in regards to Nebuchadnezzar.  He was to experience insanity for a period of "7 times" (Dan. 4:32), and this was equal to 7 years.  Also, the Bible describes the last half of the Great Tribulation period as being "a time and times and the dividing of time."  This would mean the equivalent of 1 year, then 2 years, and 1/2 a year, or simply put....3 1/2 years.

As for what JWs believe about the mark of the beast, I want to research this answer a little more.  I do know that they typically interpret "beasts" in prophetic books of the Bible as referring to world governments.  So, my guess is, that they would consider the mark of the beast as being one who is loyal to these governments.  Scripturally speaking, however, the beast referred to in Rev. 13 is actually a man, who will be a world ruler during the Tribulation period.  Those who receive his mark of loyalty (probably having to do with a computer chip or bar code), will be lost with no hope of ever being saved.

I don't know if I have fully answered your questions.  If I can be of any further help, please let me know.

Take care, and have a great day.

Derrick
