Jehovah`s Witness - How has your life changed

Expert: John Bergman - 12/1/2005

Question
I noticed from your profile that yousaid your life has changed for the better.  This is quite different from what many ex JWs say.  They say that being a JW had a detrimental effect on their lives and they are better of out of the religion. So could you please give your story as to how you are better and why you say it is because of JWs.  Could your life have changed just as mich by a christian religion

Brian

Answer
Dear Brian:

I'm glad that you ask this question, because there are so many reasons why that my faith has been very important and helpful to me.

You see, I was baptized a Catholic, but we never went to church, I don't know why.  Most of my life, it was just me and my mom and we were very close.  However, we were poor and living on food stamps and we sometimes got help from my brother, who was an alcoholic.

TImes were very hard and I sometimes doubted the existence of a loving GOD.  If there was one, I said to myself back then, then why were we poor when others were rich, why does my brother act verbally abusive to me and my mom.  Maybe he didn't love us, maybe he didn't exist!

There was one incident that happened that really got to me.  I was 15 years old when my mom died of cancer and there were people, even though in retrospect, they were trying to reconcile me, who said that it my mother's time to die, that it was GOD's will and that HE needed another angel.  Well that did it for me.  I hated GOD and became a full fledged atheist of the first order.

However, even though I felt I was an atheist, I still had questions about the meaning of everything.  I was hungry for some sort of foundation, because it got to a point where atheism was not sufficient in helping me out.  So I began to look and seek for something to based my life and my convictions on.

I met Jehovah's Witnesses through my foster mother and I thought at first that it was another of those crackpot religions. But the more I ask questions about GOD and JESUS and what's happening all around us, the more it began to make sense.  Especially involving death.

With all due respect to your beliefs, sir, but we have been lied to about death and the reason why we die. It's not GOD's will for mankind to live 60 or 70 so odd years and then to be put six feet under.  We were meant ot live forever on a paradise earth where peace and love abound.  WHen you think about it, why love and respect a GOD that has some sort of time table were babies and children and people we love and care for can die just like that.

As you also know, when you look at the papers or on TV and you see starvation, war, poverty, crimes against people, it makes the heart break.  Satan is doing this to people and against people.

The real true teachings from the Bible has made me not only a better person, but it made me very hopeful for the future.

As to the other people who were Witnesses and decided not to be anymore, I can't answer that. That's between their conscience and God.  But I know that my faith is strong and that love is the only true answer.

If you want more information, you can contact me, or you can go to the Witnesses' website:  www.watchtower.org.

Peace and love, sir
John
