THE ANSWER TO THOSE TWO QUESTIONS FILL MANY MANY BOOKS. MINERALS ARE WORTH PENNYS TO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. THE RARER THE PRETTIER THE BETTER THE SHAPE AND COLOR ALL ARE FACTORS IN DETERMINING VALUE. THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO GET A BOOK ON LOCAL MINERALS THAT ARE IN YOUR AREA SO YOU CAN START OUT ON AN EXITING ADVENTURE LOOKING FOR ROCKS AND MINERALS. I DID THE SAME MANY YEARS AGO AND I LOVE IT STILL. GOOD LUCK
