Jewelry, Gems, & Minerals - Ring Markings

Expert: Peter Lumetta - 11/15/2009

Question
I have a gold butterfly ring with pink stones.  The ring is marked "10KP 3HD602".  What do these markings mean?

Answer
HI ALLISON,

THE "10KP" STANDS FOR 10 KARAT PLUMB GOLD. THIS WAS A RESULT OF YEARS OF SHORTTHE GOLD CONTENT BY MODERN MANUFACTURERS. THE TERM "PLUMB" MEANS IT IS ACTUALLY 10 KARAT GOLD AND NOT 9.8 KARAT GOLD. THE OTHER MAKINGS ARE THE MFG. STYLE AND CODE NUMBERS MAINLY FOR INVENTORY. THANKS FOR ASKING

PETER
