I was looking for similar info as I have a 9k W&G garnet ring with the Anchor indicating it was made in Birmingham and it appears to have a "V" which is supposed to indicate the year but it almost looks like a square root symbol.  Anyway, I haven't been able to find much about "W&G"; however, someone else posted a link in another answer on here so here's the link to that page.  Maybe it will help if you can read it:

Williams, Grenfell & Co 1820's Birmingham is who the other person said the maker was but my ring may have been made in 1995.  I bought it at a flea market in Northfield in the Birmingham area when I was in the UK visiting friends in 2001.  I bought it very cheap... maybe $10-$15 US.  It would be wonderful to find out it was worth a lot.  I'm happy with it even if it isn't worth a lot of money because it was something I bought on my first trip abroad.

Good luck!
