what are bell caps used for and how are they attached?

I don't really understand the question but, I will answer to the jewelry making level.
Bell caps have a number of uses but we use it to set on top of a pearl or a gemstone to make earrings or pendants.
usually it is attached with glue or cement but there is some that you can use in beads jewelry and make bracelets or necklaces with it.
