Jewelry Making - Polishing metal after using liver of sulfur
Expert: Dr. Ari Roark - 6/27/2009
Question Hi,
I've used liver of sulfur for the first time. My chain and wire is a dark matte gray. Now, what is the best way to polish it to retain the effect but make it look truly antiqued with a bit of shine of possible? I first tried sanding it a bit but that just removed the liver of sulfur. (I have a dremel tool but I don't have a tumbler.)
Sincerely.
Kathryn Koehler
Answer Hello Kathryn,
try sealing the oxidized parts with micro-crystalline wax, carnauba wax, or beeswax.then use a 3M radial bristle disc ( try the light green 6 micron style) for polishing around your colored areas. It is the best way to get a high shine and leave the oxides in place.
I presume you know that with liver of Sulfur you can get a wide range of colours from pink to black, by varying the time and heat in the solution.Use some scrap silver to make sample tiles recording different times in varied temperatures of the solution weighing the LOS , or eyeballing the sizes of the pieces you use and recording that in your mind ( though the scale is more accurate if you want to reproduce the results again exactly!).
Oh by the way, tumbling it will remove any oxidation- only tumble polish non- oxidized pieces.
Glad to be of assistance.
Best regards,Ari
Hello Again Kathryn,
I am wondering what was not clear or helpful? Do you need more information?
