I have had exactly the same problem, I succeed about 50% of the time,Tne way I do it is to heat with a butane lamp in complete darkness until I get an all over dull glow, not a cherry red but enough toclearly see the fork with the blow lamp turned off, of the 50% that didn't work perfectly I reckon I get 25% of the duff ones back with some carefull sanding and a bit of filling (with silver solder), I do not re-plate any of my work, if you wish to look at what I do search online for pixiejools upcycled jewellery
