Jewish Food - What does "parve" mean?

Expert: Rikki Spivak - 7/9/2009

Question
I see Parve written on some foods - what does that mean?

Answer
The word Parve is used to tell you that the food contains neither meat nor dairy and can be used with both types of foods.  It means it is a neutral food.  Often, fruits, vegetables, breads, cookies, cakes, candy - anything without any animal byproducts are parve.  If it is made with any butter, whey, milk, animal fats, etc, would mean it is not parve.
