Job Hunting Tips - I am in a catch 22 and I cant get around it.

Question
Hi Andy!
Here's my situation. Last year I attended Remmington College for Medical billing and insurance coding. I graduated top of my class with a 4.0 average in July of 07.I did an internship that was 160 hours doing coding. I went on the job search and had one temp job through appleone that lasted a week. I was offered a job at a Chiropractor's office but it wasn't billing, so I turned it down thinking I would find something in my field. Well, that never happened. Now, all this time has passed and I KNOW it looks bad on my resume that I haven't worked. There was another circumstance that slowed my search for a job, my mom had a stroke and needed help. My sister is now living with her and I am able to work with nothing holding me back..
I keep getting the response, "if you just had some experience." I am loosing hope. My parents are urging me to work anywhere, but I feel like if I do that, I will never see a job in medical coding. I also suspect my resume could be worded better, but my instructor said it was fine.
What can I do to change to catch 22 I am stuck in? I am stuck working for Walmart al my life and throwing all the money I paid for school down the drain? Please sir, any advice would be deeply appreciated. Any chance you could look at my resume?
Penny

Answer
Hi Penny,

What your parents may have forgotten is that finding a job IS a full time job. I know you are discouraged but you need to keep your head up & keep a positive attitude because negativity comes across loud & clear during a job interview.

I would be happy to review your resume as well as the cover letter that you normally attach to your resume. In many cases, the cover letter immediately attracts a hiring manager to look at your resume but it can also act as a negative if the cover letter is poorly written.

You can send both to afay1@comcast.net & please give me a couple of days to review & respond to what you provide. I may have some interview ideas as well as other avenues for you to consider in landing the job you’ve worked so hard to attain. Receiving a 4.0 Grade is something we definitely want to point out in your cover letter & during the job interview.

As soon as I received both documents, I’ll start working on them for you.

Regards,
Andy
