Job Hunting Tips - Career Change

Question
I'm leaving my sales career behind. Quite frankly I don't have the stomach or the drive to do that stuff anymore. I'm a GREAT support person and my computer skills are above average. I don't have any real formal training but I have done tech support and I've done a lot of computer work on my own. How do I tailor my resume to show that!

Answer
Dear Marika,

Making a career change can be frustrating as you search for the right company willing to give you a chance. Many times starting at a company’s Technical Help Desk can get your foot in the door & let your eagerness to learn & excel do the rest. You will be exposed to the various IT groups (Computer Operations, LAN, Application Development, Desktop Support etc) & by providing them excellent service from your Help Desk role you will begin building a reputation as someone who provides excellent support & eventually leave the Help Desk for one of these other positions. OK, so how do we get there…..

In your resume, certainly list any technical courses or seminars you may have taken. If you haven’t taken any courses, then list the software programs where you excel as well as those where you have familiarity. Show how you used these skill sets in your sales role & how you were able to help your co-workers. Share any technical projects or problems that you helped resolved. Bring in your skill set that made you successful as a Sales person & show how those skills can be applied in a technical manner. Honesty, timeliness, eagerness to learn, determination & dedication are all skills that you want to have shine through in your resume. If you need help in making that happen, please send me a copy of your current resume as well as an idea of what area of IT you wish to enter & I will work with you to create a resume that helps you reach your goal.

Marika, I hope this info has helped & if I can further assist please let me know. I wish you all the best in your career change. When time permits I would appreciate you filling out the alllexperts.com questionnaire.

Regards,
Andy
