Expert: Andy - 9/24/2006

Question
I'm a 35 yr old male and live in Colorado, back in 2000 I was charged and pleaded guilty to 3 class 5 felony counts of Fraud and deceit(it was for perception fraud). I went through drug rehab and completed my three years of probation. I have had no record before or after this. I am having a real problem find a good job, I know I can no longer work in banking which was my career field before.  I have looked into getting my record expunged, but cannot do so till 10 years as passed from the date of conviction. Do you have any helpful advise on how I can find a good job and what company are willing to hire someone with a record like mine?

Answer
Hi Brian,

The future is not as bleak as it may currently seem. No one is infallible & we’ve all made mistakes. One of the keys to your job search will be finding a person or company that is willing to give you a 2nd chance. Your sincerity & honesty will be of utmost importance because if given a 2nd chance you will be under the microscope until you build credibility & your daily actions will speak louder than words. OK, so where do we go from here?

You are looking to work for someone else; have you considered working for yourself? You are obviously an intelligent person who could easily master the skills of designing websites for small companies. Taking a few classes & networking with others taking the classes as well as the instructors can certainly get you started in the right direction. Small businesses do not have the expertise to load simple software or make minor fixes to equipment. This is another area that you can capitalize on as well. Go to Office Depot, have some business cards printed & start pounding the pavement once you acquire the skills necessary. Believe me, it is not as difficult as it may seem.

There are a number of jobs you can do from home such as using your computer to type medical transcriptions. You work at your own pace; the more work you complete the more money you earn. Also, as long as you get the work completed by the agreed upon deadline, you basically can work whatever hours you wish. It could all be about what you are willing to do for yourself rather than what others can do for you.

Another thing to consider is doing some volunteer work. Community programs usually hire from within & this is another good avenue to pursue. Leaders of these community programs may also be able to give you some leads as well as act as excellent references for you.

Stay strong & focused. Don't let others tell you it can't be done. You are working towards getting your life back. Make it happen. I wish you the best of luck Brian. Please let me know if this information was helpful by filling out the allexperts rating section.

Regards,
Andy
