Question I need some help but I'm not really sure what I need to ask for. I'm just going to start from the beginning.
I'm 30 years old and I'm in a dead end job with a lousy company. Not only is it a lousy company but I'm sitting home right now because I basically got lethal injection for a speeding ticket. I'm on a one week suspension.
I'm currently working for a call center for a major wireless phone company (think, can you hear me now). I'm an intelligent, educated guy and I feel like I can do so much better but my history isn't quite what I'd like for it to be. I have plenty of experience in radio, but I haven't touched a mike in over 5 years.
I have such varied skills. I'm an expert with written and verbal communication. I can fix a computer. I can troubleshoot a cell phone. But here's the rub, the only things I've done in a professional setting are radio and my customer service stuff.
Contrary to what I've written here, I'm an excellent writer. I'd be good in HR. I've got a good lead with a local junior college as a recruiter. I could do something with computers. But the problem is, I've never done this stuff on the job and my resume doesn't really relate to this. And not to mention if Good Lord willing I get in front of someone in an interview I become a babbling choke artist.
I've actually got some questions. What do I need to do to get my confidence back with my job skills? What do I need to do to make my resume look better and more focused. And most importantly, am I hirable in the jobs that I want and know deep in my heart that I can do really well.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
Answer Hi Ryan,
First, let me apologize for the lateness of my response. I had a medical emergency & have just arrived home this morning.
OK, so you have a job you hate in a company you hate. So, the obvious solution is to leave for a better place. Life is too short to be miserable for 8 hours a day in a place where you don’t want to be. You stated that you are an intelligent educated guy, so let’s capitalize on that person rather than deal with the guy who is not pleased with his past work history. When in a lousy situation, being positive will get us through most difficult times in our lives. I know that sounds pretty simple but we both know it’s not.
So one of the 1st questions we need to answer is “What do you want to do?” You left radio but do you want to go back? You sounded a bit hesitant when you stated you hadn’t touched a mike in over 5 years; however, in the same vain I think this may be something you would consider doing under the right circumstances. Is that correct?
Excellent written & verbal skills are always in high demand. Is a job in Public Relations something that interests you? Are you more comfortable working directly with the public or behind the scenes? You make it sound like your experience in radio & customer service is a negative & you couldn’t be more wrong. These are many definite & transferable skills that can me utilized in many different industries or positions.
Have you ever been responsible for hiring or training employees? You mention working as an HR rep or perhaps in recruiting. OK, so you’ve never done this before. Someone sharp with excellent written & verbal skills can start off as an entry level HR rep & quickly move on to bigger & more responsible positions. You need to apply for numerous HR positions & get a few interviews. Now the interviews…..
Experienced interviewers expect candidates to be nervous during an interview, so please remember that. There are some basic questions that every interviewer asks…”why do you want to work for our company” “what excites you about the position” “how did you hear about the opening” “will you please tell me a little about yourself.” Be prepared to answer those basic questions. You can prepare yourself by developing your own “30 second Ryan commercial.” You can practice this in front of a mirror & include highlights of your education, accomplishments in your different jobs & ending with your desire to make a career change that will allow you to help others. At the end of your 30 commercial, ask if there is any area that they would like you expand upon.
Yes, you possess the skills needed by most HR organizations. If you need help with your resume or just want me to check it out for you, please send it to afay1@comcast.net & I’ll provide you any enhancements I think may help you land the job you want. Once again, I apologize for the delay & I wish you all the best in your job search as well as reiterate my offer to check out your resume. Best of luck Ryan & when time permits I would appreciate you filling out the allexperts.com questionnaire.
Regards,
Andy
Ryan,
Thank you for filling out the allexperts.com questionnaire. However, I think considering I had a heart attack & responded to your question as soon as I had access to a laptop, my timeliness was the best under the circumstances & did not deserve a rating of "6." Perhaps had I not explained why my response was late, the rating would be deserved. Best of luck to you.
Andy
