Job Hunting Tips - US Infrastructure and/or Development Firms

Question
Hello,

Thank you so much for your prompt and helpful response. It must have taken you quite some time to provide me with the findings you did. I deeply appreciate that. As to Bechtel, it seems like a company that I would be interested in. However, its closest location to my home is San Diego, which is about a 2-hour drive. It is a little too far. Washington Group seems like the most attractive. I have left a message in the HR Department and hope to receive a response soon.

I have also researched the last 3 companies you listed and have some questions about them. Based on my findings, Macquaire International is either a university in Australia or a mortgage-finance company. Is it possible that a typo was made when Macquaire Int. was listed in the email you sent me? As to Deutsche Bank, my understanding is that it does not have locations in California. The closest would be in New York. Moreover, this company is a bank and not an infrastructure/development firm. Correct?

Lastly, I have a question about Shaw Group. I have called repeatedly and it is not an option to get someone on the phone or even leave a message! Isn’t that strange? Anyways, based on the research I did, it seems like Shaw Group does not really work with constructing bridges, railroads, etc. Rather, it seems like this company predominately operates in the energy sector. Is this correct? If not, if Shaw Group constructs the kind of infrastructure that I would like to get involved in, then how do I contact the company?

Thank you so much again. Charlie

Question -
Hello,

At 25 years old, I have a bachelor’s in International Business with an emphasis on Global Strategies and a master’s in Diplomacy (Political Science). Also, I have traveled extensively in 55 countries. I would now like to work for an American international infrastructure and/or development firm that constructs projects-such as building railways, renovating residential areas, building roads, bridges, etc.-in emerging European economies such as Poland, Estonia, Croatia, etc.

What I specifically would like to do is work to the top and eventually try to convince European governments to allow the company I am representing to engage in various infrastructure and development projects. Could you provide me with 15 or so names of US infrastructure and/or development companies that operate along the lines of my description? Being that I am based in Greater Los Angeles, I would very much like to work with a firm that has an office here.

Thanks,
Charlie

Answer -
Hi Charlie,

This was a tough one but I was able to find a few. Here they are:

Bechtel
Washington Group (Highland, CA)
Macquaire International
Deutsche Bank
Shaw Group (Irvine, CA)

Hope these are of help to you. Good luck in your job search.
Regards,
Andy

Answer
Hi Charlie,

I was unsure where in LA you lived & thought perhaps Bechtel’s San
Diego office might be within daily driving distance. They’re a great company that is always looking to add talented people with international experience. Sorry that one won’t work out.

Macquarie International was a mistake on my part. They are a diverse international fund & I thought I saw an office in LA. My apology.

Re: Deutsche Bank, I found an office listed @ 300 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles 90071-3151. As you know they provide financial solutions aka money LOL for infrastructure projects worldwide. My thinking of adding them to the list was if you could get your foot in the door & meet with someone there, it may also give you some new leads to check out in LA.

Yes, the Shaw Group is predominately an energy related company that also provides environmental, infrastructure & emergency response services after natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods etc. Their office located in Irvine has a number of open positions available for Engineers with many different work disciplines. One of the more important resources an emerging country needs is a source of energy & with that energy foundation everything else that we sometimes take for granted in the US becomes possible. The contact info I found is:

Shaw Group
3347 Michelson Drive
Suite 200
Irvine, CA 92612-1692
PH# 949-261-6441
Fax# 949-474-8309

Charlie, I’m unsure if this is the same contact info you found. If so, here’s another idea since no one seems to be answering the phone. Try writing a nice letter & faxing it to them. If that fails, I’d go directly to their office & see someone in person.

Hope this is helpful & if it is, please fill out the allexperts.com questionnaire on their website. You have a very interesting career objective, so stay focused & determined. I wish you the best of luck in your search.

Regards,
Andy
