Job Hunting Tips - Job hunting out of state

Question
Hello,
I sent my resume to a company in Oregon (born and raised in Nevada, I would like to live in a different state once in my life). So the owner writes back, "When are you going to be in Portland so we can arrange an interview?" So I write him back "Thank you for expressing an interest in my experience I could bring to your company.  At this point I do not have any definite travel plans to the Portland area. However, something could easily be arranged at a time that is convenient for you." so he write me back "We are very busy so calendars flex.  When you plan to be here for interviews, I can schedule someone to interview with you." So my question is how do I get the guy to fly me to the interview, plus show me a city which I have never visited before. which is something my company does for first time interviews and if I guy were to offer me a job I would accept it if the salary was the same as a I make in cost of living terms.

Answer
Matt,

Sorry to give you bad news but in my opinion if the owner was extremely interested in meeting with you, he would have offered to fly you to Oregon. However since you left the interview date so open ended, I’m sure he figured an interview could be arranged when you decided to come to Oregon.

Now, here’s an idea….you can always come clean & state that you want to have employment prior to making the move & ask if he is willing to fly you out there for an interview. Honestly, I think your chances are slim but all he can say is no.

Best of luck to you Matt.

Regards,
Andy
