Question How do I apply for jobs if I am unlikely to get a favorable reference from my current employer or if I resign? The reason for the unfavorable reference is not anything sinister or a reflection of my abilities (I am in an Executive Administrative position), just as a result of an unfortunate clash of personalities and an unresonable and difficult employer to work for. I am concerned that if I submit my current employer's name as a reference, it will go against me no matter how well I might do at interview. How does one get around such a situation when applying for new jobs. If I was to resign because of this situation, would that go against me even more and make it almost impossible to get a similar job at a similar level I am currently at, or is there a way around this also when applying for new positions?
Answer Mark,
Do not use your current employer as a reference. Use other people in the organization that will say favorable things about you as references.
In most cases when a company is contacted to confirm employment/salary etc, that is all they will do. They will not give the reason anyone left their employment. Good luck & let me know if I can further assist.
