Job Hunting Tips - misdemeanor convictions

Expert: Andy - 4/6/2007

Question
Hi,
I am job hunting, on all these applications they ask about
convictions. In 1991 I had a misdemeanor drug conviction (crystal meth) & in 1992 had a misdemeanor petty theft conviction. I was young and stupid. I no longer partake in any criminal behavior.
On these applications I read this information:

California: California: Applicants need not disclose marijuana-related convictions that are more than two-years old or misdemeanor convictions for which probation has been successfully completed or otherwise discharged and the case has been judicially dismissed.

I successfully completed probation but never had my record
expunged.
Q. Do I still have to disclose this information? Will this
information show up on a background check?
Most of these applications have been on-line so I can't
give an explanation.
Thank you for your time and any help on this subject.

Answer
CC,

Yes, this information will be found during a background check. For those applications online, I wouldn't worry about it unless they call you in for an interview. At that point you would have to disclose your errors of the past.

Make sure that you explain these are errors made in the past & that you have changed your life around & become a productive member of society. Best of luck to you CC.

Regards,
Andy
