Question
hello, i've only had one job and i only have one reference (former supervisor). i worked it for about 8 months. it took me four years to find my first job from (18 to 21). i've been unemployed for about 8 months now and started applying for work at the beginning of this month. how do i go about writing a resume with so little to put on it.

Answer
Dear Eli,

First, references do not just have to be former supervisors. Long time friends, co-workers, former teachers & clergy can also attest to your character & can be used as references. Although you may have only 8 months to document as part of your resume, you are still young & that is understandable. With this being this case, there are other positives we can accentuate on your resume.

One of the keys in your cover letter is to explain why four years passed before you landed your first job & why you have not been unemployed for the last 8 months. Have you been attending school, or caring for an elderly family member, or doing volunteer work?

In your resume, I would document every responsibility you held in your last position. I would mention whether you worked independently or as part of a team. I would mention if you were responsible for making decisions; I would mention any & all customer interaction that took place whether it is externally or internally. I would note any computer expertise you possess as well as your verbal & written communication skills.

Eli, you must accentuate the positive during your future interviews. Let the interviewer know that although your experience is not extensive, you have the eagerness to learn & will be a dependable employee if given the chance. Be yourself during the interview & be honest.

I wish you all the best Eli & please let me know if I can further assist.

Regards,
Andy
