Job Hunting Tips - resume help

Expert: Andy - 11/20/2007

Question
I worked for a bank for 17 years.  The company downsized and my management position was cut.  That was in September 2006.  I decided to return to school full time and work part time.  I started the PT job 12/06 and school 01/07.  I'm considering returning to a FT job (while taking classes online) but need to know what to write on my resume regarding the past year.  I have a nice resume detailing all I did with the bank but how do I account for the last year?  Also, the PT job is not in management, will that raise any issues?  Thanks!!!

Answer
Mel,

Sorry for the delay; I was unavailable to respond to your note sooner.

Many companies are impressed with the fact that potential candidates take their on-going education so seriously. It's is very understandable that you couldn't go to school & work full time simultaneously & that you took a non-management position to help pay the bills during this period. Being downsized in today's business world is not a "black mark" on your work history, so please don't feel that way. You have a wealth of experience in the financial field & have plenty of real time expertise to share with a lucky financial institution.

Mel, I would mention your decision as part of your cover memo as well as noting your on-going education as part of the "educational" section of your resume. I wish you the best of luck in your career search & if I can further assist, please let me know.

Regards,
Andy
