Question
I want to work with computers, but my work experience has been in factories and retail. My resume mentions my computer skills, but all mine are hands-on. I have trouble with the academics. remembering the details long enough to take the exam.

Answer
Mark,

What do you want to do with computers? You state that you have hand on experience with computers- is it with software or hardware or both? To work with any kind of hardware type of computer job, you would need to have formal training for most companies. If you want to do data input or work in a position using Word, or Excel etc, you may be able to apply to those types of jobs if you have taught yourself the programs.
There are tutorials on the Microsoft website for their software programs that are extremely helpful in honing your skills.
In listing your computer skills on your resume, you could say "hands on training" to denote that you don't have the formal training but are self taught.
Check into your local VoTech, community college or colleges and see if they have any continuing education classes in computers. These classes are usually very low priced and you will get the training without the grade. In many of them you will receive a certificate stating that you completed the training courses
I hope that this answers your question and is of some help to you. Good luck. Jeannine
