About Austin Scott
Expertise
I am a huge fan of Elton John`s, and take it upon myself to learn as much about him as I can. I know a lot of obscure facts as well as many people associated with Elton over the years. I love to share my knowledge with other Elton fans or just the curious. I`m a dedicated fan...I`ve gotten myself three autographs at concerts, one from as far back as 32 rows! If I don`t know your question, I`ll try to find it!

John, Elton - ELTON'S PIANO TRAINING

Expert: Austin Scott - 8/24/2009

Question
How much did Elton practice the piano in the first years. Also, did he really have to work at it.

Answer
Hi David,

Elton is a natural talent on the piano.  He was playing songs by ear on the piano at the age of three and entertaining his parents' guests.  He did take formal piano lessons starting around the age of seven. He originally trained to be a classical pianist, although has said he always hated it and the formality.  He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at 11. He was able to craft melodies early on.

Early on, he practiced a lot, but this mostly due to the fact that he was in lessons, on scholarships, and a child!  He really didn't have to work at the piano playing, especially for his pop-rock piano playing.  He's such a natural talent with an amazing ear.

I hope this helps answer your question!
Thanks,
Austin
