Question
I was wondering if you could tell me how to write my own material and be funny all of the time.I would like to become a comedian\actor some day.I would like to be one of those people who is fun to be with and just be funny with whatever i say.My dad used to own a comedy club called Wiley's Comedy Club in Dayton, Ohio so i am kind of familiar with the way comedians work.So if you could give me some tips on how to write material and be funny that would be great.Thanks.

Answer
Sean,
One of the things I always say is I can't tell people how to be funny or how to write jokes. It's something they have to figure out for themselves. I know there are books, and comics give work shops and such, but I really think that the only person who can teach you to be funny is you. It would be me trying to explain to you how to ride a two wheel bike if you have never been on one. The only way to learn how to do it, is just get on and try. So, there are things that you obviously think that are funny, so just start trying to talk about that. Find your voice. Find what works for you - a style, a method, your technique. My jokes are mostly about personal experiences - those are all unique to me - so I don't have to worry about being like somebody else, or another comic stealing my jokes, because they only work for me. In time, you'll learn what works for you by how people respond to what you say, and how you say it. The key is to not push it. Comics starting out try so hard and really push their jokes on people. Just relax and be yourselve and ease back on the throttle. In time, like riding a bike, you just figure out how it works.

Good luck and I hope to run into you in the clubs,
John Moyer
