Question Hi,my name is Erica. I have been writing comedy (stand-up that is) for about two years. All my material is original. I have a problem though performing. See, I am only 15. I am under age for many comedy clubs if not all and I am also afraid that some people will feel that since I am only 15 that some great comedic topics like politics, sex, relationships, and drugs are to inappropriate or intelligent for some one my age. Any suggestions on what I should do?
Answer Hi Erica,
Eddie Murphy was younger than you when he started doing stand-up. In fact, there are a good many now famous comedians that started young.
I feel you should follow your heart and dreams of being a comedian.
Have you ever performed? Even in front of family and friends? This may be a good start, a way of honing your timing and delivery.
It can be tough to get in to clubs at your age, but some clubs will allow you in (with parental accompaniment) for open mics. It may just take you pestering the hell out of the club owner or bar manager?
You can also check other venues in your area such as talent searches. Be careful with talent searches, do your homework on the organization that is conducting the search, a lot are scam artists.
So, no you are not too young for comedy.
Good luck Erica and please let me know how it goes.
