Answer I suggest Janis Joplin--18 Essential Songs to begin with. There are many anthologies made of Janis, but this one by far is the most complete. It starts you off with Trouble in Mind-- A recording Janis made before she even became famous, and ends you with the original non-accompanied version of Me and Bobby McGee. It is the best album to get because you can get an idea of how Janis' voice sounded at the beginning of her career, and how it sounded at the end after her 3 years of heavy alcohol and drug abuse. This album also has all the classic songs, and, as opposed to "Janis Joplin- Greatest Hits" actually gives you some songs that you might not be so familiar with. My favorite aspect of this album is the recordings they choose. Pay special attention to the recording they've chosen of Big Mama Thornton's "Ball And Chain" It is actually the original tape from Janis and Big Brother's DEBUT at the Monterey Pop Festival in '67. This is where Janis became famous!! Just an interesting tidbit :)
If you have any other questions, or need an idea for which album to buy AFTER you've worn that one out, just give me a buzz and I'll be glad to help :)
Thanks for your question,
