Question Hi, I'm a high school sophmore and I've always wanted to study journalism. Specifically I'd like to be a feature writer for a magazine, or maybe something that has to do with music, like a music reviewer or blogger (?), I'm still deciding. I've been looking for colleges I'd like to go to, and what colleges would be good for what I want to do. So far I have NYU, Colombia, Boston U, UC Berkeley, Florida U, and Northwestern as a list of possibilities..but I still don't really know where I'd like to go. I'm creative and open minded, I like to be around a broad variety of people and cultures, and to be in a place that keeps me alert and interested. I also like the city life, which is why NYU or Colombia are kind of my number one choices right now, but I don't know if they'd be my best choices journalism career-wise, I want to be able to impress an editor. Where do you suggest? Also, I've been researching, and some people say that going to J-School doesn't really teach you what you need to know, to study something like English lit. to become a better writer. Is that true? Thanks! You're seriously helping me out.
Answer Greetings Marilyn,
This is a tough question, and there's no simple way to answer it. My suggestion is to continue your research online, call some of the universities and ask questions about their journalism programs, and if possible, take a couple of summer trips to some schools you are interested in.
There are just so many options and so many good schools. I wish I could be of more help.
