Subject: judo or jujitsu?
Question hello sammi, which in your highly regarded opinion would be the better art to take, judo or jujitsu? i'm 60 yrs. old and want to stay in shape and have fun doing it. also self defense tactics and the most practical and easiest to learn would help me to determine which is best for me. i'm 6ft. tall and weigh 200 pounds and stay in shape by running and lifting weights. my only problem would be all the throws i would have to endure. thank you, rick nnlane@netzero.net
Answer Hi Rick,
Well that's a toughy. You see judo comes from jujitsu. Judo just uses the throws, pins, armlocks, chokes, it does not use the strikes or kicks, leg locks, wrist locks, finger or ankle locks. So if your looking for self defence judo works but the extra skills, like strikes and kicks and all the rest you get from jujitsu give you a better edge. You're right learning to take all the falls for throws can be pretty hard on you. Actually learning the falls aren't as bad,but after you learn how to fall, is the tuff parts being thrown alot in practice by others can be hard on the body. The question I have for you is do you have bad knees or a bad back or bad shoulders, are your bones strong. All these will determine if your body can hold up for judo or jujitsu. As much as I'm not a fan of karate or any of the other striking arts if you are worried about all the falls judo and jujitsu may not be for you. You do want to do some weight bearing excerises, such as weight lifting. To me judo and jujitsu is the best self defense arts, mainly because 90% of all attacks end up on the ground, and judo and jujitsu are excellent ground fighting arts. I'm not sure how much I've helped you, but I hope it did some. Let me know how it goes for you, my email is senseisami@sbcglobal.net Thank you for the question. Sandi
