What is the Kabbalistic understanding of Messiah?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for your question.

In Kabbalah, there are many different beliefs and interpretations regarding "messianic consciousness." You could speak with (10) Kabbalists and receive (10) different answers on this topic (depending on religious beliefs).

One interpretation, is that you (your divine Self) is your own messiah and no one else can "save you" or "redeem you." With most esoteric traditions around the world - the key idea is to look within yourself to find your own answers. Once you've arrived in your own "promised land," - you'll find inner peace, tranquility and a feeling of oneness with The Divine.

When your consciousness has evolved to the point where the God-force is continually flowing through you; you'll have achieved a state of messianic consciousness and there will be no more questions to ask - and the answers won't matter (because you'll have gained divine wisdom).

Such individuals are called Tzaddiks (righteous ones who are conduits between the mortal and Immortal). In other traditions, these individuals are referred to as Mahatmas, Bodhisatvas, Masters of Wisdom, etc.

Please refer to an excellent book by Gershom Scholem: "The Messianic Idea in Judaism" (which covers Kabbalistic teachings as well).

I hope this information will be helpful for you.

Best wishes,
