About Sensei Henry
Expertise
I study several Martial arts..Karate (Goju Style), Kendo (the application of the sword), Iado (the drawing of the sword), and Judo\jujutsu (Kodokan Style). I run a very traditional dojo in Florida. As a Sensei of the arts I try to keep my style true to their creation. My students and friends understand that Martial Arts especially Karate is not a hobby it is a way of life...

Subject: Using a leather tsuba in kendo

Question
Would using a leather tsuba at practice be disrespectful to higher ranking individuals?

Answer
Yoshi, that shouldn't be disrespectful to use a leather tsuba at practice in my dojo, but all dojos have diffrent rules.  If I was you- ask your head sensei about it and if he say it is ok, then noone should contest it.  In my Kendo dojo we all respect the "Bogu" and a leather tsuba would not be a problem. We  enjoy the art and not the politics of gear.  Heck, I would like a a Stuba if you have an extra one let me have it...Ha, Ha,Ha
Take care
