Question I need to know how Lexington Ky got it's name and what it was named for. Thank you
Answer Hello Courtney,
As a native of Lexington, Kentucky I have always been under the impression that Lexington was named in honor of the first battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Lexington, Massachusetts, but I wanted to be sure so I've done a little research for you through the Kentucky Historical Society.
Taken from an article in the Lexington Leader (now the Lexington Herald Leader) dated 02 April 1916 concerning history in and around Lexington was the following account:
FORMALLY SURVEYED in April, 1779, Lexington took its name from a camp christened June 5, 1775, by hunters from the fort at Harrodsburg led by Robert Patterson and Simon Kenton. It is the first city of the land whose name memorializes the opening battle of the Revolution.
So I guess I was right, it was named after Lexington, Massachusetts. You can find this article and others of interest including an article concerning mummies found by the settlers of Lexington at www.rootsweb.com/~kyfayett/shrines.htm
I hope this answers your question. If I can be of help with anything else please feel free to write again.
