Question HI! HOW ARE YOU???? MY SON IS DOING A PROJECT IN SCHOOL ON KENYA. THE SCHOOL HAS ADOPTED A VILLAGE SO THE CHILDREN ARE GOING THROUGH A WONDERFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCE :) FOR HIS PROJECT I HAVE TO MAKE A POSTER SHOWING 4 FOOD GROUPS I HAVE ALL OF THE BASICS MEAT, DIARY, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND WHEAT. I HAVE FOUND WORDS IN SWAHILI FOR THESE FOOD GROUPS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THEY ARE CORRECT FOR MEAT I HAVE THE WORD NYAMA FOR DAIRY I HAVE THE WORD MAZIWA FOR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES I HAVE TUNDA FOR FRUIT AND MBOGA FOR VEGETABLES AND FOR WHEAT I HAVE THE WORD NGANO. I ALSO HAD TO MAKE A TITLE AND FOR THE I HAVE FOOD FOR LIFE AND THE WORDS THAT I HAVE IN SWAHILI ARE CHAKULA KWANI ROHO. I HOPE THAT IS CORRECT IF NOT COULD YOU LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P. Answer Hi Melissa,
The project certainly does sound exciting! You've done a great job with the translations, but a few suggestions:
First off, Maziwa is just milk so for dairy products I'd rather Vyakula (plural for food) vya ng'ombe (which is literally food from cows) - it might however be quite a mouthful, so you don't have to use it!
Chakula kwani roho while the words do stand for their english equivalent, used together they do not convey your intended message! Food for life would be better as Chakula kwa uhai.
The bottom of the poster's The way of life translated would be Hali ya maisha (to mean the state at which life is), but if that's not what you're trying to say, then Njia ya uhai would be it (to mean how to ensure life at a desired level...which I think is what you were going for, if I'm not wrong). Let me know if there's anything that's not clear or if you need more info!
