Subject: Women of Nakuru

Question
Going on Mission trip to Nakuru and in order to not offend anyone, I am looking for specific dress of the women in this area. It was my understanding that the women still wore dresses/skirts for the most part and got very dressed up for church. Many of us women are looking for specific information as to what is the normal clothing there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Sara,
I know what you mean. I was really surprised that the women and men there take church really seriously. In Nairobi, any kind of wear goes!
So yes, your sources were right. Women in Nakuru wear long skirts (past the knees) that are not tight, though not downright tawdry of course. Shoes are mostly flat, that is, they don't have much of a heel. Sandals are good for this ... the slightly stylish ones, not the ones that are worn in the house. The blouses are fitting, not tight.
They are pretty accepting of others though, but I believe for church, it would be appropriate to wear skirts. You don't have to wear dresses, but if you should, let then mot be too tight as to be a distraction to the men.
For other days of the week, they dress down quite a bit. Many still wear skirts, but a number wear jeans and trousers. For some reason, people in Nakuru always look smart, I don't get how they do it!
Stock up on nice shirts, low-heeled shoes, a couple of vests (in case it gets too hot), t-shirts and jeans, though none too small or tight, and sneakers.
I hope this helps, but if you need any more information, let me know!
Enjoy your trip to Nakuru, it is a very lovely place. God bless your mission!
