Keyboard & Mouse - Cleaning a keyboard

Expert: Murray S. - 1/8/2003

Question
Hello:
What is the best way to clean a keyboard of dust, hair, and sticky fingers? I don't want to do anything that may cause damage. Thank you.

Answer
Howdy Alice:

The keys themselves can be popped of and cleaned that way..  Just be very careful..  If you are going to do it like that, I suggest you make a cardboard template that resembles your keyboard EXACTLY and, as you pop the keys, put them on the template.  That way, you know where they go back.

Then, just use a compressed air bottle to blow the dust away.

I have know some people that actually put the keyboard in their dishwasher.  Works like a charm..  Again, use compressed air to blow out most of the water after and then let it dry thoroughly.  If it is warm outside, put it there until totally dry.

All that being said, based on the low price of keyboards, just buy a new one..  I replace mine every six months or so.
