Question Hello Dwight,
My question pertains to the type of heavy bag I should be purchasing for Muay Thai kick boxing training. I have attended a few classes but currently my schedule will not allow me to continue so I am planning to continue my training at home. Some background information for you: I am 22 years old, ft tall, weigh 160 lbs and I have a very athletic background (basketball/volleyball/soccer/hockey). I would also say currently my lower body would be the stronger of two which I hope to train further and as well bring my upper body into similar shape through my current strength training regimen. Also I have started yoga to increase my flexibility specifically for kicking.
I have read over the responses you have answered with regards to this question but had a more specific question for you. I notice that you advocate as a starter a 70 lb bag and as well leather versus the leather synthetic material as it will last longer. However my question lies in that I am fairly serious with regards to my training and would be willing to pay a little bit more for a quality and durable bag as it will last longer. What I wanted to know if it would be advisable for me to start off with either a 100 or 125 lb heavy bag, the type of bag (heavy or banana) and the type of filling in the bag that I should be looking to purchase. I would probably be mounting this in my basement in a double ended set up if possible, and with regards to the height I have to work with it is approximately 6.5 ft.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Thelak
Answer Thelak,
Sounds to me like you have the almost perfect setup for your 125lb banana bag. 6.5 feet doesn't sound like too much headroom that's why I say "almost perfect".
That's definitely the way for you to go. How much room do you have to move around?
You have many opportunities for obtaining a good quality bag from places like Muay Thai Stuff, Combat Sports Int'l, etc.
Best of luck to you, sounds like you're headed down the path to greatness!
Hail,
