Answer Hi, Becca.
I'm the author of many books about art for kids. I will give you a couple of easy projects:
1. sand drawing: with squeeze bottles of Elmer's glue, draw on cardboard or paper. Then sprinkle sand on the glue lines, and let the extra sand fall away. there you have it!
2. plaster of Paris: make a flat indentation in the sand, about the size of a pie pan...the sand should be moist... arrange shells and other little beachy items directly in the sand. Mix plaster of Paris with water (see directions on the package...and it's cheap stuff), and pour into the indentation. Let dry. When dry, lift the hard plaster out of the sand, brush away extra sand, and see the pretty design saved in the plaster. Sand will be sticking to the plaster...it looks cool.
3. collect some pretty shells or other beachy items like feathers or dry seaweed. Find one nice piece of drift wood. Glue the shells, etc. to the wood. Let dry. Nice little beach scene.
4. find big clam shells (that's what we have in Washington state) and draw on them with marking pens
also: if you draw on them with crayon, leave them in the hot sun and the crayon will melt and soak into the shell.
5. collect all kinds of garbage and rope and logs and stuff at the beach. bring it to one place. Build a big huge beach sculpture by standing things up, tying stuff to the logs, and generally, making a big noticable structure. Decide if you will leave it there when you leave the beach, or put it in the trash.
