Subject: 2 year old refusing to eat and drink

Question
My son has just turned two, and he is refusing to eat, and only drinking very little.
We are in our third day, and I have noticed today that he has not pee-peed this morning (I changed his diaper at 09.00 and it is now 13.30).  He went through the phase of not eating just before christmas, and we went back to formula and this seemed to help, but because he is refusing to drink also, this is not working now either.
I have spoken with my doctor about this before and he said as long as he is getting fluids and passing urine, things are okay, but as I just mentioned, this has too stopped.
Normally is the happiest child around, but he is starting become miserable and very grouchy (plus he is sleeping longer at night, normally he would up around 06.00 and he is sleeping two hours more now).
Any kind of help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Sarah,

Whenever you notice a decrease in urine output in a young child, this always warrants a call to the doctor. Young kids dehydrate pretty fast especially during the summer months.

There are many possible reasons for his decrease in appetite including:
1) Teething
2) Ear infection
3) Cold or virus
4) Or he just does not feel like it!

Children are so unpredictable and he may just be going through a very picky food phase right now. But, you should take him to his Dr. to make sure the cause of his decreased appetite is not health related.

Hope this helps and I wish you both the best!

Regards,
Dr. Tara, Pharm.D.
