Subject: 2 yr old w/ bloody nose

Question
The past to nights my son has woken up in the middle with a bloody nose. It doesn't last very long, however it still worries me. Am I worrying for nothing? What could cause this?

Answer
Dear Felicia,

Most often, the cause of bloody noses in kids is dryness of the mucousal membranes and/or direct injury from a finger, etc. The best way to prevent them is to use a cool mist humidifier in his room and try some over the counter saline nose drops. And, since most kids his age will not hesitate to stick their finger in and start digging around in there, you should remind him to avoid doing this since it often leads to a slight bleed.

If his nose still continues to bleed after a few nights of treating with saline, I would take him to his Dr.

Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!!

Best,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
