Subject: 6 YEAR OLD WITH CONSTANT LEG PAIN

Question
MY GRANDDAUGHTER IS 6 AND COMPLAINED OF HER LEGS HURTING HER.THIS WAS AT 6PM . SHE WENT TO BED CRYING THEY HURT AND HAS BEEN TOSSING AND MOVING HER LEGS AROUND ALL TONIGHT ,WAKING UP SAYING THEY HURT TO HELP HER,AND I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO FOR HER PAIN.

Answer
Hi Lori,

My five year old is going through the same thing right now. Most likely your granddaughter is experiencing some growing pains which should go away on their own in a couple days. Another possibility is that she performed a new exercise or activity at school which caused her to use muscles she has not used a lot before. In either case, you can try giving her tylenol or motrin (with food at bedtime to help with the pain.

If the pain gets worse or doesn't go away after a couple days then I would call her doctor.

Hope she feels better soon! Take care.

Best,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
