Question My three month old was 5 weeks premature and has been congested for 2 and a 1/2 months. Our dr. says it is small nasal passageways that are stuffed. We have tried everything suggested, saline, suction, humidifier, elevated head at night etc. It has never improved and it is interfering with sleep and his contentedness. Is there any other possible cause or treatment?
Answer Dear Christine,
I feel your pain. My girls seemed to be constantly congested when they were little as well. Unfortunately, there is no magical and safe treatment for infants his age especially since he was premature. The treatments you listed: saline drops, cool mist humidifier, suction, are all the most commonly employed treatments. If these are not working, most likely only time will help.
Now, there are some things you can try to help your sanity while your baby's nostrils and nasal passages become larger and his weight increases. Make sure you take time for yourself if at all possible. Go get a manicure, a massage, or just take a walk alone while someone stays with your baby. These moments of peace will equip you with the strength to get through the next couple months or so.
I wish you the best and lots and lots of sleep in the very near future!
Warmly,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
