Question I am a teacher in a two year old classroom and quite concerned about one of my students. I have talked with her parents and they don't seem to be very concerned. While at school (usually about 9 or more hours) We will only change one wet diaper, two if we are very lucky. For a while we had trouble getting her to drink anything but are getting her to drink alot at school now, two or three cups for lunch and snacks. But she is still urinating only once at school. Mom says that she gets constipated easy and they give her a suppository. But my concern with this is she is never having a bowel movement on her own and she is only having one once a month or so.
Answer Hi April,
How sweet of you to ask. You must really care a lot about the kids you care for and that is wonderful. And, I see your concern, one wet diaper a day does not sound right to me either. Take my 2 year old for instance, she urinates at least 8 times a day! It sounds like the child in question may either be dehydrated and/or may have an issue with her kidneys. Does she seem bloated or full of fluid? Either way, I would try to urge her mom to take her to the pediatrician just to make sure there is nothing going on that needs to be treated.
I hope this helps and I wish you and your kids the best!!
Regards,
Dr.Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
