About Astrid van Woerkom Expertise Kids - if you have heard or seen something on the news you don`t understand, or if you would like to know more about a certain current affair, you can ask me about it and I`ll try to explain things in a way you`ll hopefully understnad.
Experience I, now a highschool student, have been watching and hearing the news from the time I was four years old on, and I remember hearing of affairs (Gulf War I in 1991, for instance), while not understanding what was Iraq and why there was war. Fortunately, my Dad's always been extremely good at explaining things to me. I hope I can answer other children's questions and explain what's happening around *smile*.

Question Hello again. thank you for your quick reply, it was a very interesting answer. I think it is mainly an issue of prejudices being held, and in Britain there is racial discrimination over jobs, housing, immigration etc. These all cause growing racial tensions but I dont know why they are growing! People should realise that it doesnt solve anything, we should be in a peaceful world.

Hi Astrid,
What do you think are the current growing racial tensions in Britain today, and why do you think are they growing?
Thanks, Emma
Answer -
~Hi Emma,
I think for the last couple of years therés a growing problem in all western countries (Europe and the US) with prejudices about muslims and their prejudices about western people (ie. djihad=holy war). Since 9/11/2001 when the New York WTC and Pentagon were attacked by terrorists, therés become a whole load of accusations/attacks among muslims and non-muslims. At least, in the Netherlands, therés growing argument between these groups: some muslims hate all western people cause some participated in the war on terrorism, and some non-muslims hate all muslims cause some are terrorists. Here in the Netherlands (and I suppose in Britain as well) this is leading to a lot of racial problems.
I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to know. If not, feel free to post a follow-up.
Astrid
Answer Hi,
Yeah I agree with you, it's quite weird how people are prejudiced of people with certain races. I think it's mainly because some of these people are for instance criminals (as if Brits or Dutchmen aren't criminal!), which leads people to assume that all eg. black people or muslims etc are bad. Quite stupid, I think.
