Kitchen Design/Remodeling - gas line in a new kitchen

Expert: Van Wilson - 10/7/2009

Question
We had to reinstall a kitchen uptairs in our brownstone. The installer has a gas line running thru one of the lower cabinets to connect to the stove. This limiten space in the cabinet, but is it safe or to code. I live in brooklyn.

Answer
Hi Roy,

I am wondering why the installer ran your gas line in such an odd place as well. 9 times out of 10 the gas line comes out of the floor behind the stove.

I would be reluctant to trust a hook up like that myself. If your were to put something in or take something out of that base cabinet and hit the gas line and a spark occurred good bye house!

I do not believe that installation is up to code standards however you can contact your local building code enforcement agents and let them inspect your installation and they will be able to tell you what the building codes are in this situation in your area. Do not put this off your life may depend on it.

I wish you well,

Van
