Question We are installing a new tile backsplash above our new countertop. The wall is warped in one small area and the tile is not deep enough to cover the gap between the cabinet and the wall. We have 1 x 1 ceramic mosaic tiles that are pretty thin, at least compared to the usual glazed 4 x 4 you can easily buy at the home in a box shops. What is the solution for getting the backsplash smooth, even (plumb?) and cover the gap?
Answer Peggy,
The easiest solution is to "float" the "warp" to create a flat plane on the wall. You can use drywall mud if the wall is drywall, or use your tile mastic like drywall mud, let dry and apply layers until you achieve "grade". You can cut out the area and shim the studs and using a long straight edge or a piece of string determine "flatness". If you use tile mastic be careful as the stuff is tough to smooth when dry. I will take a damp sponge and smooth it before it sets ( aprox. 15 minutes) . Good Luck.
