Knitting - How to change the size of a knitted pattern

Expert: Lynadell - 5/29/2008

Question
I would like to know how to change the size of a knitted raglan cardigan I made.  It is a size 9 mos, but I would like to know the stitch differnece for a 12 mos to 4 year old.

Thank you.  Frances

Answer
Dear Frances
First find out the size of the chest that you are doing, and then divide the stitches by the patterns size and multiply it by yours.
Example.
Measurements to fit a 24inch chest.

BACK = Cast on 60sts and work for 2 inches in K1,P1, rib.

So you would divide 24 into 60 to find out how many stitches to the inch that they were doing and then multiply it by the size of the child you are doing it for.  (say 30inch chest)

Equations = 60 / 24 = 2.5  then * by your chest size of 30 = 75.

That will be 75 stitches that you would cast on for your bigger size.  The length will be ok throughout the pattern as you will just make it long as you need.  Do this for any stitch requirement like casting off XXXX sts for the armhole etc.  Leaving stitches for the back neck too.

Let me know if this helps or if you need any more help and I would be only too happy to assist.
