Question How do you continue in the established pattern if you are increasing 1 st? How do you "work even in pattern until the piece measures..?
Answer If you are increasing sts. at the edge, you want to incorporate them into your ongoing pattern. It depends on what your pattern is--what the pattern multiple is (number of stitches before it repeats itself.) If it is a complicated, lace or large multiple, you might work the extra sts. in stockinette stitch until you have increased enough stitches to work another multiple. Or, you can work partial multiples. For instance:
If you have 12 sts. and you are to K3, P3, across the row, if you increase one stitch at each end, you would then work P1,* K3,P3* ending with K1.
For cables, you will increase and work in st. st. until you have enough to do the entire cable.
To "work even" just means to keep knitting the pattern without any increases or decreases.
