Knitting - casting a throw

Expert: susan wills - 10/7/2009

Question
Using bulky #5 yarn, how many stitches do I need to cast on to start a throw 50' x 72"

Answer
To calculate this you need to first do a gauge swatch. Use your chosen yarn and chosen needle size, anywhere from us9 to 11, knit up a 4" X 4" sample swatch in the pattern you  will be using in the throw.Estimate the number of stitches to cast on for the swatch, try 20.
Now lay a ruler somewhere in the middle of your swatch to measure how many stitches you are knitting per inch.
Once you have that number multiply it by the width of your desired throw size.
If you desire a throw 50" wide and perhaps get a gauge of 3.5 sts per inch.
Then 50 X 3.5 =175 sts.
